STX Films has released the new trailer for its new film, National Champions, a fictional sport drama focuses on a protest raged by young athletes against team managers. The film focuses on two college athletes, soccer players looking to NFL selections in the future, which ignite a player’s strike three days before the national championship game. What follows are the efforts of the few college players to wheel a whole range of sports managers, executives, coaches and profiteers to get fair compensation and equal rights as other league players.
The trailer begins with star quarterback LeMarcus James (Stephen James) making a television announcement about how he and his fellow college athletes are not offered payments under the pretext of getting opportunities to play at the NFL. James points out how players who do not make it NFL and fall prey to financial problems, which hinder their lives and existence. James then encourages his fellow colleagues to join him in a strike against the National Collegiate Athletic Association and claims status as paid employees instead of college athletes. And in a blatant press release, James further unleashes a war while explicitly disclosing salary details of his coach and NCAA executives, yielding both support and threatening criticism. Will James be able to withhold his position against cash mine sharks?
National Champions is the story of some powerless but volunteer athletes who stand up for their rights to receive equitable compensation and National Champions plans to unravel the systematic flaws in college sports governing bodies. It is about a college revolution that takes a stand against a coach and his management team who are determined to protect his legacy. The trailer promises a compelling story driven by a talented ensemble. The film stars Stephen James (21 Brûe), JK Simmons (Whip), Alexander Ludwig (The lonely survivor), Jeffery Donovan (Fire notification), Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk).
The film is actually produced by Russell Wilson, a former quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, who also briefly appears in the trailer. National Champions is directed by Ric Roman Waugh who previously directed Shot Caller (2017) with Nikolai Coster-Waldau in the lead role. The film, which was distributed among STX films, was adapted from Adam Mervis’ play of the same name and was written for the screen by Mervis himself. National Champions was released in theaters on December 10, two weeks after it was postponed from its original release.

Now, with only hours to kick off, the head coach (JK Simmons) and several power brokers (Lil Rel Howery, Tim Blake Nelson, Andrew Bachelor, Jeffrey Donovan, David Koechner, Kristin Chenoweth, Timothy Olyphant, Uzo Aduba) have to face the clock around the protect or destroy the prevailing collegiate athletics system.
