New rumors suggest Marvel wants Jon Bernthal as The Punisher in a new Spider-Man movie

Rumors of Jon Bernthal’s Marvel return as The Punisher are nothing new, but new proposals have made the rounds in the wake of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

From the beginning, this article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye, so if you’re still trying to avoid it, you should leave now.

Marvel fans have seen how many of their Christmas wishes come true this year with crosses, returning stars and the promise of much more. Spider-Man: No Way Home delivered more than it promised, with villains and heroes from Sony’s previous Spider-Man universes coming together, along with a brief introduction to Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock / Daredevil, and Hawkeye concluded this week with the arrival of another former Daredevil participant in Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin. So the question is where does that leave other stars and characters who have previously played Marvel characters on TV?

According to rumors that have already done the rounds and are now being fueled again by recent events in the MCU, Jon Bernthal is allegedly sought in the MCU as The Punisher. Although it has been suggested before by fans that Bernthal should make a return as the character, this time it looks like he may be wanted by Marvel himself to appear in one of their as yet unannounced new Spider-Man movies, as well as’ a solo project somewhere further down the line.

It should be pointed out that at this time it is very much a rumor and apparently relies on many things that come into play. For a start, there are Bernthal’s remarks that unless the character was done right and did not come as some “watered down” version, he was not interested in returning, but in 2018 he said he would like to with Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man after the couple worked together on the movie Pilgrimage. He said at the time:

“I’m in love with Tom Holland, do you know what I mean? That’s my guy. For me, it’s not about … I have no aspirations or desire to do anything but what I do. I love this character. I believe in him. He is in my bones. I feel honored to play him, and I want to keep playing him. So in all honesty, there is no part of me that says, “Oh, I hope I’m in the movies.” That’s what it will be. That said, there is one character and one actor for whom I have only the greatest respect in the Marvel Universe and without a question it’s Tom.

The biggest obstacle to that, however, is that it’s very likely that any Spider-Man collaboration should be a PG-13-rated affair, and Bernthal does not want that. Earlier this month, he told The Hollywood Reporter:

“So I was really grateful, respectful and tired of the places where that role took me and the world I had to live in. That said, this is where that character should be. It should be a level of darkness. I think if there is any disappointment for that character, you are doing a disservice to the character, to every repetition of the character, to every comic book that has occurred, and to all the incredible fans of the character. This character means so much to people in the army. Like I said before, it’s not about whether you do the character; it’s about whether you can do it right, and I’m just interested in doing it right. ”

Despite this, Disney and Marvel Studios seem to be considering some of the darker and more mature-oriented characters of the Marvel Universe, with such Dead pool set to make their MCU debut in an R-rated format soon. With the Netflix Marvel Television universe has always trampled the darker side of the comic book world and it seems like it’s cannon in the MCU now, at least as far as the Daredevil series is concerned, it could all be a good sign for those hoping to see Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle somewhere in the future.
