Last year, the entertainment industry was hit hard by the pandemic, as many highly anticipated films are expected to be released in 2020. had to be delayed far in 2021 or, worse, canceled altogether. As such, moviegoers were excited to come out in masses for the eventual 2021 releases. In fact, the year 2021 saw an 81.4% increase in global box office statistics compared to last year. The postponement seems to make them even more sought after. Although it was a sad situation for the year 2020, it certainly strengthened the catalog for 2021.
Movies — especially action movies — are a wonderful escape from reality, and every now and then everyone needs a little break from reality (especially from our current reality). With adrenaline rushing through them, viewers can search for alternate excitement through their favorite characters on screen. The year 2021 brought some interesting characters to follow, including a former assassin disguised as an average joe, an Oklahoma farmer with a secret past, a mystical superhero and a medieval knight seeking revenge for his wife. It also brought another chapter for our favorite web slinger, cyber criminal and secret agent. Here are the top 10 action movies of 2021.
10 No time to die
For the last time, Daniel Craig resumes his role as James Bond in the action adventure No time to die. After leaving active duty, Bond is caught in a new mission when Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright), an old CIA friend, needs Bond’s help in locating a dangerous new villain.
9 Jungle Cruise
The Disney action adventure Jungle Cruise is based on the Disney theme park ride of the same name. It follows the story of scientist Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) in search of an ancient tree with healing powers. Lily is convinced that the tree will change the face of medicine. As such, she commissioned a boat through the jungle for her and her brother along with the skeptical steamboat skipper Frank Wolff (Duane Johnson). The plot thickens when it is clear that the three travelers are not the only ones looking for the highly coveted tree.
8 The last duel
The last duel was adapted from the 2004 book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial By Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager. The screenplay is by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Matt Damon plays Jean De Carrouges a knight who avenges his wife Marguerite (Jodie Comer) after she accuses Jean’s friend Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) of sexually assaulting her. The movie is interesting in that it shows each of the three characters’ perspective of the events before the duel itself takes place.
7 The Matrix Resurrections
Keanu Reeves, Carrie Moss and Jada Pinket Smith play their roles for the fourth installment of the Matrix Franchise, The Matrix Resurrections. The movie takes place 20 years later The Matrix Revolutions, where Neo aka Thomas Anderson (Reeves) settled in normality. Early in the film, he begins to get flashbacks of a life he cannot remember and eventually finds himself back in the Matrix. Once in the Matrix, Neo must assemble a group of rebels to fight a new (and more advanced) enemy.
6 The Suicide Squad
In The Suicide Squad, the stand-alone successor to 2016s Suicide Squad, intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) once again creates two teams of supervillians, with a promise to reduce their prison sentences. This time we see the rag crew on the island of Corto Maltese and get the mission to stop an anti-American regime responsible for a top secret experiment called “Project Starfish”.
5 The harder they fall
The star is strewn The harder they fall is produced by Jay Z and as such has an excellent soundtrack that records the action with style. This out of the box action-western stars Jonathan Majors as Forbidden Nat Love. When Love finds out Rufus Buck (Idris Alba) his arch-enemy is getting out of jail, he arranges a post to track him down, hell bent on revenge. However, Buck has a team of his own and they do not go down without a fight.
4 Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings
Shang-Chi (Sim Liu) plays a kung fu master who, on the orders of his father, leader of the mysterious Ten Rings organization, finds a mythical village with his sister. During their mission, Shang-Chi must face his past that he hoped to leave behind. While Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings did compile a bit of background story from hundreds of years ago, the majority of the movie fits in with the MCU timeline, shortly after the events of Avengers: Endgame. A prosecute after the popular movie has already been confirmed.
Bob Odenkirk plays former hired killer Hutch Mansell who lives in a suburban life Nobody. One night on the bus, he sees some men assaulting a woman and intervening by hitting the men badly. This incident opens a door to Hutch’s past, and danger inevitably follows.

Ou Henry is an action western starring Tim Blake Nelson, Stephen Dorff and Trace Adkins. When a farmer named Henry (Nelson) and his son take in an injured stranger and save his life, bandits come looking for the man. When Henry steps in to rescue the driver, he reveals gunslinger skills that no one expected from the farmer. This calls into question Henry’s past. Tim Blake Nelson gives a Excellent performance in this character-driven action film.
1 Spider-Man: No Way Home
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) deals with the consequences of his identity being revealed. Unable to separate his two lives and protect his loved ones, Spider-Man enlists the help of Doctor Strange. The action-packed third installment of MCU’s Spider-Man begins an epic battle with recurring enemies from 5 of the previous Spider-Man movies, including all three chapters of Sam Raimi’s Spider man trilogy, and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man duology.
Marvel’s record at the Oscars is not as good as Marvel Studios’ boss Kevin Feige would like, but can Spider-Man: No Way Home change that?
