Gal Gadot says her Cleopatra movie will ‘celebrate’ the Egyptian ruler’s story

Of course, she can not be too specific, but Gal Gadot sheds new light on her coming Cleopatra Movie. Gadot was originally to be reunited Wonder Woman helmsman Patty Jenkins, who would also serve as director of this project. It was recently announced that Jenkins will now be producing the film and Kari Skogland (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) came on board to direct the film.

The story of Cleopatra is one that has been told over and over again over the years, from books to movies and everything in between. This poses a challenge when creating a new film, as Gadot and Skogland will be tasked with bringing something unique to the table for this new Cleopatra to stand on its own. Talk about the movie with Reverse, Gadot teased that the story would dig into how cunning Cleopatra was along with the former ruler’s eternal legacy.

“I can not divulge much, but I can tell you we are going to celebrate the Cleopatra story,” Gadot said. “We’re not just going to show how sexy and attractive she was, but how strategic and smart, and how much impact she had and still has on the world we live in today. I have all the Cleopatra movies throughout history, but I feel like we’re telling the story that the world needs to hear now. ”

Cleopatra 1963
20th century

One of the most famous adaptations of the Queen of Egypt’s life story is the 1963 film Cleopatra by director Joseph L. Mankiewicz. With Elizabeth Taylor in the title role, the movie also starred Richard Burton, Rex Harrison, Roddy McDowall and Martin Landau. Taylor set a new record at the time with her $ 1 million salary for making the movie with Cleopatra who also set the record at the time as the most expensive movie ever made at $ 31 million (keep in mind that this is 1963 money). The project even bankrupted the studio.

Cleopatra was the highest-grossing film of 1963 with critics responding largely positively to the film. It was also up for a slew of Oscars at the Oscars, which includes a nomination for Best Picture and victories for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design. With the right director and star, the possibility is always there for a new Cleopatra movie to have similar success, and Paramount moves on full steam ahead with Gal Gadot and Kari Skogland.

Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven, Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot produced the film, and her partner Jaron Varsano under their Pilot Wave Motion Pictures banner.

This project is said to be a top priority for Paramount, but a release date has not been announced with no new word on when filming could begin. The reported plan is for the Cleopatra movie to see a release sometime in 2023. Until then, Gadot’s fans can see the future next Cleopatra star appears in Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile, coming to theaters on February 11, 2022.
