MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The film received almost universal praise from critics, praising Kathryn Bigelow’s directing, Jeremy Renner’s performance, writing, editing and action sequences. The Hurt Locker was nominated for nine Oscars and won six of them, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. It was also the first of two Best Picture winners directed by a woman (the second was Nomadeland), and Kathryn Bigelow is one of only two women to win Best Director (the other is Chloe Zhao for Nomadeland). In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Register by the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

The official summary for The Hurt Locker reads: “After the death of their respected staff sergeant in Iraq, sergeants find. JT Sanborn and specialist Owen Eldridge saddled their Explosion Weapons (EOD) unit with a very different team leader. Staff Sergeant William James is a hardened risk taker who apparently thrives on war, but his gift of defusing bombs is not denied. The film was shot in Jordan, which is within miles of the Iraqi border, to achieve Kathryn Bigelow’s goal of authenticity. Iraqi refugees were also used for extras and the cast worked in the intense heat of the Middle East.
