10 Day after tomorrow
The 2004 sci-fi movie Day after tomorrow is definitely one for the books. Filled with an incredible cast — including Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ian Holm and Emmy Rossum — this disaster movie will make viewers shudder along with the characters. It follows a group of high school students on their way to New York City to participate in an academic event. However, extreme floods and other violent weather disasters occur, leaving them stranded and frozen inside. The game is heightened if one of the teens is injured, and the group has to wait for a rescue that may or may not ever come.
9 Ice Princess
A lighter movie to watch when the weather gets cold is the 2005 comedy, Ice Princess. Following the daily life of the math wiz who became skater star Casey Carlyle, this feel-good film is perfect for families and teens.
Despite her mother’s disapproval, Casey secretly practices ice skating – and blows off her studies in the process. With the help of a former professional skater, she manages to qualify for sections. However, her dilemma does not end there, as her mother expresses her contempt for Casey’s rate change. Overall, it’s a story to get to adulthood that still lingers today.

As a live-action remake of Disney’s first princess film, Snow White and the Huntsman is a tighter version of the original story. This film, which was released in 2012, boasts a lot of magic and star special effects. This has led to a long series of sequels, Ice age is perhaps just one of the most iconic animated films of the new millennia. This kid-friendly comedy, released in 2002, has left audiences stunned. It follows the journey of a woolly mammoth named Manny, a groundbreaker named Sid, and a saber-toothed tiger named Diego as they try to reunite a lost human baby with his migrating tribe.

Based on the Stephen King novel, The shine (1980) is one of the most iconic horror / thriller films of all time. After the life of Jack Torrence, a writer and recovering alcoholic, he becomes the winter-time caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in a remote area of Colorado. With his wife and son by his side, his mental health goes downhill, and he becomes extremely violent. Meanwhile, his son Danny gets horrible visions and he speaks in a whimsical voice that does not belong to him. The film set the bar high for everyone horror movies that followed.

4 The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Based on the novel series by CS Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe led to the production of two more films after its huge success at the box office. The story follows four siblings (Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy) as they enter a magical wardrobe that transports them to a fantasy world.
Within the realm of never-ending winter, they meet many strange creatures, including talking animals and a faun named Mr. Tumnus. However, their joy is cut short by the White Witch who is determined to keep the kingdom under her tyrannical control.
3 Blades of Glory
In the 2007 comedy film, Blades of Glory, fans are treated to more than 90 minutes of hilarious. Two rival skaters, Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy, are banned from skating men’s singles for life when they get a fight on stage after their performances.
The story follows their journey as a coach tries to get them both back on track by forcing them to skate as a pair. The two have great potential for success – if they can just stop fighting long enough to complete the routine, Michaels’ nonsense combines with MacElroy’s accuracy.
2 The Revenant
The Oscar-winning film The Revenant (2015) is another movie to watch during the winter. The story takes place in 1823 in what is now North and South Dakota, and follows the cruel life of trappers in the area.
The main character Hugh Glass struggles to fight several enemies, including the French, the Arikara, his own companions and even a grizzly bear. This is a bloody movie with a lot of awkward scenes. However, those who enjoy historical movies while watching from the comfort of a cozy couch might like this winter movie. But film critics like Roger Ebert did not want Leo to take home as Oscar for his role as Glass.
1 The Mountain Between Us
Based on the novel by Charles Martin, The Mountain Between Us (2017) follows the journey of dr. Ben Bass (a neurosurgeon) and Alex Martin (a photojournalist) while surviving a plane crash in the middle of a mountainous area.
Since their flights were canceled, the two agreed to travel together in a small plane to get from Idaho to Denver. Bass had emergency surgery to perform, and Martin had to come out at her own wedding. However, their story quickly becomes a struggle for survival as they try to step back to civilization in the frozen terrain.
