Award-winning filmmaker You West is back with another genre-bending horror film, X. The film revolves around a group of unsuspecting filmmakers whose plan to shoot an adult film on an old farm is violently thwarted by its elderly owners. Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Sacrament) wrote and directed X with the background of A24 films. An official trailer was recently released, which you can watch below.
X will be West’s first film since 2016, and from its looks he really wants to make up for his absence with this bloody abomination. X features a talented star group consisting of like Mia Goth (A cure for wellness, Suspiria), Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi (Do not look up, result), Jenna Ortega (Scream, stuck in the middle), Brittany Snow (American Dreams, Pitch Perfect), Martin Henderson (The Ring, Virgin River) and Owen Campbell (As you are) with Stephen Ure (Dead gas). The official summary for X read as follows:
“In 1979, a group of young filmmakers began making an adult film in the Texas countryside, but when their withdrawn, elderly hosts caught them in the act, the cast found themselves fighting for their lives.”
Raunchy, spooky, and boasts a 70s vibe, X trailer begins with Snow pointing at cameras rolling on the adult movie titled “Farmers Daughter.” Dreaming of making it in Hollywood, the crew rents an old farm without telling the owner what they plan to shoot. “Well, it’s better to beg for forgiveness than to ask permission,” says Henderson’s character. That kind of thinking spelled doom for many people.
X looks incredibly intriguing and feels like a fresh air in the world of recharging, remanufacturing and legacy sequels. On top of that, Ti West has not disappointed in the past. The trailer also gives a meta-feel with dialogues like “I see one goddamn f **** d up horror picture” and “You do not wanna leave, do you?”. There are also hints that the couple has a disturbing secret about the woman, Pearl. That said, the filmmakers of X has maintained secrecy until now, and except for a few, even character names have not been released yet. There is undoubtedly more to the movie than meets the eye.
Although the title suggests otherwise, X was rated R “for strong bloody violence and blood, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and language.”
The name A24 Films has become synonymous with bizarre yet outstanding horror films in recent years. For example, 2021’s Lamb, starring Noomi Rapace, was about an Icelandic couple raising a goat-human-hybrid baby. Hereditary, midsummer, en The witch is one of the more serious horror films made by A24. On on the other hand, X feels like a crowd-pleaser, mixing fright with fun. We’ll find out more when the movie comes out. X is expected to be released on March 18, 2022.
A new teaser for The Tragedy of Macbeth points to the ominous, which affects the adaptation to come.
