A24 and Sean Baker go hand in hand and their collaboration has yielded some very thought-provoking films that are unlike anything else on the market. The Florida Project explore the lives of 6-year-old Moonie (Brooklynn Prince) and her friends as they spend their summer days living in motels on the outskirts of Disney World. What this film does, like many other A24 projects, is to give us a glimpse of real, grim characters we do not normally see on screen. We watch Moonie and her mother (Bria Vinaite) make rent every day, and the film features some of the best young actors ever. Willem Dafoe deserved an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of motel manager Bobby.

A24 introduced us to several new filmmakers, including the talented Greta Gerwig, who wrote and directed one of the greatest coming of age stories of our generation. The film follows the story of high school student Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) as she navigates love, friendship and personal identity. One of the most endearing parts of the film is the honest and loving relationship between Lady Bird and her mother (Laurie Metcalf). Lady Bird is a perfect blend of comedy and drama and features several great performances.

A24 manufacturers are masters at creating grim, violent thrillers. Green Room follows the aftermath of a punk-rock band witnessing a murder at a venue full of white supremacy. They are imprisoned by a group of skinhead psychopaths, led by the sinister Darcy (Patrick Stewart). The film creates tension and tension as we watch the group plan their escape. The dialogue is sharp, and the performances are fantastic as it depicts the awful situation in which they are trapped. Although it’s a violent movie, with some scenes that are hard to watch, it’s a must-see for anyone who loves thrillers.

A24 has produced several major horror films, but Ari Aster’s Hereditary is by far their narrowest work to date. The combination of Ari Aster and A24 fits perfectly, and we can not wait to see what makes them next. Hereditary is a gruesome film about a family dealing with grief after the unexpected death of the youngest child Charlie (Millie Shapiro). While the matriarch, Annie (Toni Collette), tries to make contact with Charlie in the afterlife, a sinister force begins to disrupt the lives of the family. The movie is terrifying from start to finish and features one of Collette’s best performances to date.

A24 is a studio that is not afraid to take risks and create meaningful, thought-provoking stories. The Safdie brothers’ Good time is an exciting story about Connie Nikas (Robert Pattinson) trying to get his brother out of jail after a failed bank robbery. The film is filled with vivid images, original camera techniques and a dynamite count that brings it all together. The film has a lot of heart, as far as the relationship between the Nikas brothers is concerned, and the film basically rediscovered Pattinson’s career. You never expect what’s going to happen next in this movie, and it should be seen by everyone.

Barry Jenkin’s Oscar-winning film was a groundbreaking work of art. The film tells the story of Chiron at three different points of his life as he struggles with his sexuality and finding his place in a cruel world. At the same time, his mother (Naomie Harris) is a drug addict, and the only affection he gets as a child, his from her drug dealer, played brilliantly by Mahershala Ali. Moonlight is heartbreaking, but is an authentic story about love and the struggle of life. A24 has proven that they can create Oscar-worthy films that are tied together with highly original stories.
