In development since 2017, the American adaptation of the award-winning Swedish comedy, A man named Ove, finally going forward with Marc Forster (World War Z, Finding Neverland, The Kite Runner). Hollywood Icon Tom Hanks has been associated with the project since the announcement and will play the lead role. Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, will also serve as producers on the film.
The currently untitled remake is based on the 2012 novel A man named Ove by Fredrik Backman. Funny and heartwarming, the novel was honored worldwide and spent 77 consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, selling more than 7 million copies worldwide. A Swedish film adaptation of the same name was released in 2015 to garner good reviews and widespread praise from the audience, and became one of Sweden’s biggest hits. A man named Ove also won two Oscar nominations.
Both the film and the novel revolve around the titular character, Ove, a grumpy old man. Here is a short summary of the film, via IMDb:
Ove, an ominous, isolated retiree who spends his days enforcing block association rules and visiting his wife’s grave, has finally given up on life just as an unlikely friendship develops with his noisy new neighbors.
It’s unlikely that Hanks’ character is still named Ove, but we’ll find out soon. The film will hit floors this year, and more details about the title and environment are expected to be announced soon. Oscar-winning author David Magee (Life of Pi, Finding Neverland) is on board to write down the script.
A man named Ove remake will also be the first collaboration between Tom Hanks and Marc Forster, who is a big fan of the novel. “When I first read Fredrik Backman’s novel, I fell in love with the idea that friendship has the power to shape one’s life. I can not wait to create a film with so much. humor and heart with Tom and Rita, ”said Forster Deadline.
Rita Wilson, who co-produces Nicastro Nicastro from SF Studios with Fredrik Wikström, said:
Fredrik Backman wrote a novel that entertained, moved and inspired many readers with his character of “Ove”. The humanity of the story resonated with people around the world, including myself. I have always searched for films that “People bring joy and hopefully create a shared experience of recognizing ourselves in others. It’s an honor to produce this movie and bring it to audiences everywhere.”
