Road Club now flows into China with its original end intact. Recently, the film made headlines when it was reported that a Chinese cut of the film strongly censored the ending. Rather than showcasing the original movie’s climax with buildings exploding as Tyler Durden executes his master plan, China’s version censored the film so that the police would win. The new ending explained it with a title card that was suddenly shown to viewers before the credit rolled.

“Through the clue provided by Tyler, the police quickly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals and successfully prevented the bomb from exploding. After the trial, Tyler was sent to an insane asylum where he received psychological treatment. He was discharged from hospital in 2012, “reads the title card.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the censored Chinese cut of Road Club its original end has been restored. The streaming service that offered the new track, Tencent Video, did not make an official comment, although the bizarre ending has since been replaced with the original ending. This is an extremely rare development, as Chinese sensors reverse the course due to complaints, almost never happening. Although the original ending is back now, there’s still about a minute left Road Club it is missing in the track, but it mostly consists of intimate scenes involving Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter.

There have been other incidents in China with major Hollywood movies being censored to be shown. One great example would be the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody which Rami Malek interpreted as Freddie Mercury. The film was only shown in China after all references to Mercury’s homosexuality were removed. Not so, WarnerMedia’s Friends: The Reunion was hacked in China to have his cameo removed with Lady Gaga. This followed Gaga unleashing setbacks in China after meeting with the Dalai Lama in 2016.

The original author of Fight Club praised the new ending

Author Chuck Palahniuk, who wrote the original Road Club book, had some fun with the Chinese ending. He took to Twitter to comment on the story and also took the opportunity to post a picture of the signature he received Road Club actor Meat Loaf. Clearly amused by the situation, Palahniuk says: “Have you seen this nonsense? It’s SUPER amazing! Everyone gets a happy ending in China!”

In this case, it seems likely that Tencent Video censored the video of its own accord without any specific instruction from the Chinese government to do so. The setback over the censorship, coupled with the complaints that it no longer makes sense to the movie with the new ending, may have convinced the streamer to go back to the original ending. Whatever the case, chances are good we did not hear the last of the overseas censorship of major American films.
