Robert Pattinson Teases The Batman’s Jarring Opening Scene and Film Noir Detective Story

Robert Pattinson has teased the opening scene of The Batman, with the actor describing it as “jarring” when compared to every other iteration of the character. Speaking with GQPattinson has further confirmed director Matt Reeves’ aspiration for The Batman to be a detective story, an element that Pattinson was not aware is so often ascribed to the character in the pages of DC Comics.

“I watched a rough cut of the movie by myself. And the first shot is so jarring from any other Batman movie that it’s just kind of a totally different pace. It was what [filmmaker] Matt [Reeves] was saying from the first meeting I had with him: ‘I want to do a’ 70s noir detective story, like The Conversation. ‘ And I kind of assumed that meant the mood board or something, the look of it. But from the first shot, it’s, ‘Oh, this is actually a detective story.’ And I feel like an idiot, because I did not even know that Batman was ‘the world’s greatest detective’; I hadn’t heard that in my life before — but it really plays. Just ’cause there’s a lot of stuff where he’s in amongst the cops. “

With The Batman finally set to introduce the world’s greatest detective version of the character to the big screen, Pattinson revealed that his Batman will make a lot more deductions and have a lot more conversations in between beating criminals to a pulp.

“Normally, when you see Batman he arrives and beats people up. But he’s having conversations, and there are emotional scenes between them, which I do not think have been in any of the other movies.”

The idea of The Batman opening with a “jarring” opening sequence should not come as too much of a surprise, and will no doubt help audiences ease into director Matt Reeves and star Robert Pattinson’s seemingly very different take on Bruce Wayne and his alter ego.
