Super Mario Bros. Star Charlie Day Would Love a Luigi’s Mansion Spinoff

If a Luigi’s Mansion movie ends up happening, Charlie Day is here for it. Previously, it had been announced that Day was included as a part of the voice cast of the upcoming animated Super Mario Bros. movie from Nintendo and Illumination. He will be providing the voice of Luigi, the taller of the two Mario brothers known for his green clothing along with his mustache and the trademark “L” on his hat. This puts Day in one of the lead roles alongside Chris Pratt as Mario.

There’s not much that has been divulged about the new film. This is, in part, due to the immense secrecy that continues to surround the new adaptation of the popular video games. What we know is that this take will be animated, but it’s not quite clear if it will look exactly the same as it does in the more recent video games or if there will be some changes made to the characters. As such, it’s hard at this point to say what this film could lead to in the future.

One possible option would be for Super Mario Bros. to spawn another film based on one of the more popular Nintendo titles of recent years. In the video games, Nintendo has put Luigi into more of a central role with his own series of Luigi’s Mansion video games. These games play unlike most of the other Mario titles, following Luigi as he goes through a haunted mansion in an attempt to rid it of its ghosts. Recently speaking with Comicbook.comhere’s what Day had to say when asked if he’d be up to star in a Luigi’s Mansion movie.

“Yeah, my son was just playing Luigi’s Mansion the other day on his Switch. Look, I’m thrilled to get the opportunity, I grew up playing Super Mario Brothers as did everyone I know so, we’ll see! It’s like anything else in life, I’ll go if I’m invited! ‘

We have not seen any images of the film, but what we do know is that it brings in many familiar Nintendo characters. They’ll also be having an A-list ensemble cast providing their voices. That notably includes Charlie Day as Luigi alongside Chris Pratt as Mario. Charles Martinet, who voices Mario and Luigi in the video games, will have a mystery role in the new film. Other cast members include Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Seth Rogen and Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson and Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

“I’m playing Luigi,” Day said of his role in the film on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “In fact, I just was recording that this morning and I’d love to tell you all about it, but they are top secret with that stuff. Absolutely, this is serious stuff! I know nothing. I show up, and they ‘ re like, ‘You say this and you say that.’ And it’s all funny and good, and then I walk out and there’s like, two guys in overalls with hammers, and they’re like, ‘Do not you tell nobody about this Charlie!’ … Mario’s probably in the know, but they do not tell Luigi anything. “

Super Mario Bros. is set to be released on Dec. 21, 2022.
