Upcoming Mike Flanagan Horror Shows We Can’t Wait to Binge on Netflix

Mike Flanagan worked for a while before gaining worldwide recognition with Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House (2018). Since then, he has been critically acclaimed as a director, producer, and writer and has gained many fans, including Stephen King and Quentin Tarantino.

The filmmaker now has a long-time deal with Netflix, and it’s pretty productive. Flanagan – who already directed Stephen King’s adaptations Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game – and Netflix have announced at least five new series for the streaming platform.

Since then, The Haunting of Bly Manorthe second season of The Haunting anthology, premiered in 2020, with Midnight Massan only-season series whose horror is centered around religion and is loosely based in Stephen’s King Salem’s Lot, award in 2021.

Flanagan and his work in horror were already known, as a respected director of genre movies such as Oculus, Hushand Ouija: Origin of Evil. But he reached worldwide stardom with the terrifying Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House. Based on Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name, the series followed the Crain family and their tumultuous and haunted past as they try to live their lives as adults.

Critically acclaimed, The Haunting of Hill House has gained a 2020 follow-up series that established it as an anthology. The Haunting of Bly Manor tells the story of an au pair in a haunted countryside manor in the United Kingdom. Both chapters were a success with critics and viewers, making everyone wonder if a new season of The Haunting anthology was anywhere in Flanagan’s plans. But, bad news for the fans, as in December 2020, Mike Flanagan announced there are no plans for a third season of The Haunting. While this is not something we can be excited about, we wanted to provide that update.

That being said, there are two other Flanagan projects that we need to keep an eye on.

The Midnight Club is an adaptation of the book of the same name by American author Christopher Pike. It follows a group of seven terminally ill young adults that reside in a hospital – run by an enigmatic and mysterious doctor – who make a pact that says that, when one of them dies, they will try to contact the group from after death. But, when one of them actually dies – and it is not a spoiler! – weird things start to happen.

The production started filming in March 2021 and was finished later that year, in September.

With frequent collaborators of Flanagan in the cast, like Samantha Sloyan and Zach Gilford, who starred in Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club’s main cast is full of new and young stars. Igby Rigney, Adia, and William Chris Sumpter are joining the production, which is focused around the lives of young people that try to live their dreams despite their illness.

Besides being the creator of the series, it is reported that Flanagan will act as a director of the first two episodes. The Midnight Club is expected to premiere in 2022.

The Fall of The House of Usher

Edgar Allan Poe was a horror master, so it was only a matter of time until Mike Flanagan transformed one of his works into a television masterpiece. In October 2021, it was announced that Flanagan would adapt Poe’s short story The Fall of The House of Usher for Netflix.

Arriving there, he discovers that Rodrick’s sister, Madeline – the other last member of the Usher family – is also ill and cataleptic, making her look like a dead person. But, sometime after, Madeline dies – or it’s what the narrator and Rodrick think happened – and the real horrors begin.

The Fall of The House of Usher will also adapt Poe’s other works. It will have current collaborators of Flanagan in its cast: Katie Siegel, Carla Gugino, and Henry Thomas are already confirmed, alongside Mark Hamill.

In its eight episodes, Flanagan will act as director in four, while the other four will be directed by his longtime cinematographer, Michael Fimognari. The Fall of The House of Usher is expected to premiere in 2023. Production has already started, so we will not be long without new Flanagan’s works.
