Squid Game Season 2 was never in doubt, and although it took a little while for the confirmation to come from creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, the green light was finally confirmed in January this year. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about when we will see the new season arrive and what the story will be. While speaking to Hwang on the red carpet at the PGA Awards, Deadline was able to get an update on the continuation of Squid Gamebut it was not all good news.
The surprise runaway success of Squid Game caught everyone off guard, including both Netflix and Hwang. With the series having been reported to have earned Netflix around $ 900 million, and Hwang only earning a small amount from the sale of the streaming rights before the series became a phenomenon, the writer had no intention of rushing into a second season without making sure his interests were covered. Additionally, Hwang previously revealed that he was not really interested in sequels because he had a lot of other ideas he wanted to do first.
Although the second season of Squid Game is definitely coming, Hwang’s slow and steady approach means that fans may be in for a long wait to see the next season arrive on Netflix. He said, “There will be more great games, that’s all I can say. I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet. ”
Squid Game Proved to Be Just as Big a Hit With Awards Panels as With Audiences
Having pulled in one of the biggest audiences in Netflix history, Squid Game‘s popularity has spilled over into Awards Season, with the series picking up several prestigious honors in some of the biggest categories. Among the massive haul, which has tallied 15 wins from 30 nominations, Squid Game won big at the Golden Globe Awards by picking up Best Television Series, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, while it also claimed Actor and Actress Awards for Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon respectively at the Screen Actors Guild Award.
Having scored a 94% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes, the series also managed to be a hit with the critics as well as audiences, with the consensus opinion stating: “Squid Game‘s unflinching brutality is not for the faint of heart, but sharp social commentary and a surprisingly tender core will keep viewers glued to the screen – even if it’s while watching between their fingers. ”
Of course, the gory deaths of the show made it uncomfortable viewing for some, but the tight narrative story and the tense set up of the numerous deadly games that the characters were forced to face certainly appealed to a generation brought up on brutal movies such as Saw. Where exactly Squid Game will go in the second season is something that only Hwang currently knowsbut for the rest of us, there is going to be a long wait to see the terrifying series return for more fear and games.
