Jim Carrey Felt ‘Sickened’ by Will Smith’s Standing Ovation After Chris Rock Attack

Jim Carrey is not very happy with his fellow Hollywood stars after watching the Oscars. What happened at the Academy Awards on Sunday night is going to be talked about for many years to come, and even those who were not watching the show live already know the moment in question. At the ceremony, held annually to celebrate the very best movies, performers, and filmmakers, Will Smith took great exception to a joke made by Chris Rock about Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock was left with a sore cheek after Smith smacked him across the face, returning to his seat shortly thereafter and aggressively telling Rock to keep Jada’s name out of his “f ** king mouth.”

The whole fiasco has generated all kinds of controversy, as there seems to be backlash coming in from many angles. Many have been taking the stance that while Rock’s joke may have been out of line, whether or not he knew about Pinkett Smith’s alopecia struggles, Smith’s response was wildly inappropriate. There has been some heavy criticism leveled against the Academy for the lack of action over the televised attack, as some say that this sends the message that they condone the violence. People have questioned why Smith was not immediately removed from the building, something that would usually happen anytime a stage performer is attacked by an audience member. Of course, what makes this situation different is the immense fame of those involved, but some say Smith still needs to face consequences for his actions.

In any case, it was not announced until the next day that the Academy “condemns” Smith’s behavior and have launched a “formal review” into what happened. On Oscar night, however, Smith was announced as the winner of the Best Lead Actor award for his role in King Richard. Speaking about his goal to become a “vessel of love” in his acceptance speech, Smith had many in the crowd giving him a standing ovation. This was seen by some critics are further celebrating Smith’s act of violence by honoring the actor in a big way to close out the show.

Jim Carrey Has Slammed The Hollywood Stars Clapping For Will Smith

While at least the bulk of the celebrities in attendance was standing up for Will Smith at the Academy Awards, there are many Hollywood stars who felt appalled by the situation. Among them is Jim Carrey, who opened up about the incident while speaking with Gayle King for CBS. Carrey had been scheduled to appear on the program to promote his new movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but given how everyone is talking about the Oscars incident, the actor was asked his opinion on the matter. And he clearly felt disgusted by what he saw that night, perhaps even more so by the standing ovation than Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. As Carrey explains:

“I was sickened. I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless, en masse, and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we are not the cool club anymore. “

It has been reported that Rock declined to file charges against Smith, so, as of now, Smith will not be facing legal consequences for the attack. Carrey theorizes that Rock simply does not want to deal with “the hassle” of going through the legal system with Smith. The Dr. Robotnik actor stresses it was Smith’s violent response, in particular, that was problematic, noting that there were much better ways to have handled the situation.

“He should’ve been [escorted out or arrested]. [Chris Rock] does not want the hassle, I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $ 200 million dollars. Because that video is going to be there forever. It’s going to be ambiquitous. That insult is going to last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience, and disapprove, or have a disapproval, or say something or whatever … you do not have the right to walk on stage and smack somebody on the face because they said words. “

Carrey goes on to credit Smith for his film work but notes how Smith’s inappropriate behavior ruined what should have been a monumental occasion for a lot of people. Here’s what he said when King said she saw the situation “escalate” to that point:

“It did not escalate! It came out of nowhere, because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrating him. I wish him the best, I really do. I do not have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast appall over everybody’s shining moment. A lot of people worked really hard to get to that place … It was just a selfish moment that cast appall over the whole thing. “

For his part, Smith has since offered a public apology to Rock. Though he noted he acted “emotionally” because of a joke about his wife, Smith said that his actions were “inexcusable,” as violence is “poisonous and destructive.” A separate post from Jada Pinkett Smith also noted that “this is a season for healing,” adding that she’s “all for it.”
