Kiernan Shipka to Return as Sabrina in Riverdale Season 6

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka is coming back to Riverdale. Per TVLine, Shipka has set her return to the popular role with an appearance set for later this season on The CW series, which is set in the same universe as Shipka’s canceled Netflix show. Previously, a crossover had seen Shipka’s debut on Riverdale earlier in season 6, and now it seems that her involvement will be more than a one-off.

TVLine also reports that a musical episode is in the works for season 6 of Riverdalethis time taking inspiration from the American Psycho musical. That’s no coincidence, as Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is one of its writers, having written the book with Duncan Sheik providing music and lyrics. Like the novel and movie with Christian Bale, the American Psycho musical tells the story of secret serial killer Patrick Bateman.

Developed by Aguirre-Sacasa, Riverdale first premiered in 2017 and is now in the midst of season 6. Last month, the show was renewed for season 7 given its continued popularity. Inspired by characters from Archie Comics, the series follows a group of teenagers in the titular town and stars KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, and Cole Sprouse. Another spinoff, Katy Keene, was also developed, though it was canceled after one season. There are tentative plans to further expand the franchise with other potential spinoffs.

Kiernan Shipka Recently Teased Her Return as Sabrina

Getting canceled at Netflix did not stop Kiernan Shipka from playing Sabrina, as we’ve already seen with the prior crossover. Just recently, the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star had also made it clear that she’d be happy to return to the role again anytime. That makes it not exactly surprising to see Shipka coming back again for Riverdale, even if it’s just as exciting. Here’s what she had to say when ComicBook.com recently asked if that prior crossover had given her closure to the character or if it made her want to continue on for more episodes.

“Maybe somewhere in between the two. I love Sabrina and I will always jump at the opportunity to step back into that role, it did not necessarily feel like I was closing something out entirely. I love her and she’s such an important part of my life, too. So I definitely, in the foreseeable future, would not decline another opportunity to put on the headband. “

Shipka has also talked about how wonderful it was to reprise the role last time. The actress said that doing the crossover had long been a goal for everyone involved, and given the good time she had, it’s no wonder she’s on board to return for it again. As Shipka said:

“There was always the hope of a crossover, so to get to be Sabrina again was a treat. It was a thrill. Also to go over to the set and do it for a few days and really have some fun with it, versus it being my full-time job, was really interesting. I did quite literally, in theme with Rivervale, feel like I was in an alternate universe. [Laughs] It was wonderful. I enjoyed every minute of it. ”

Riverdale airs on Sunday nights on The CW.
