The Marvel Cinematic Universe has granted movie-goers an experience unlike any other. With a staggering 23 films and counting, the MCU has provided us with a plethora of content to immerse ourselves in. From the Avengers films to individual trilogies like the Captain America and Iron Man franchises, there is no shortage of content to bring every hero together for the greater good. The MCU has cranked out big-budget blockbusters, many of which hold box-office records like Avengers: Endgame which has been considered one of the highest-grossing films of all time.
The MCU is jam-packed with a wide variety of characters. From Black Widow to Groot, there’s someone for everyone to root for. That said, some characters have appeared more often than others, but that does not make them any less likable. For example, Groot may only have appeared in a handful of films within the MCU, but the character is set to receive his own animated spin-off due to the level of his popularity. 7 Scarlett Johansson / Black Widow – 8 Appearances
After a one-year hiatus from the screen due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Scarlett Johansson made her return in Black Widow. Johansson has made a decent number of appearances within the MCU as her character Natasha Romanoff, a highly trained Russian superspy turned superhero. As she is a main contributor to the Avengers, it’s difficult to imagine a time without the presence of Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson made her debut in the role in Iron Man 2 and has been an invaluable member of the Avengers ever since, making appearances in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and her very own solo origin film – bringing her total to 8 appearance altogether.
6 Paul Bettany / Vision – 8 Appearances
Previously known as JARVIS, Vision, played by Paul Bettanyhas been present since the original Iron Man in 2008. Making his original appearance as Tony Stark’s helpful AI JARVIS, he became Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron when his consciousness was merged with a Vibranium body and the Mind Stone, turning him into Vision, a new type of being more powerful than anything ever seen before. Vision, in both his forms, has made a total of eight appearances in the MCU: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgameand, finally, his prominent appearance in the Disney + original series WandaVision.
5 Chris Hemsworth / Thor – 9 Appearances
International star Chris Hemsworth made headlines when he first appeared as the Norse god in his titular role in Thor. Hemsworth has managed to emulate the character perfectly, with special praise for his performance in Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame. He’s managed to create a serious and admirable character, while also maintaining a certain level of comedy to balance out all the serious and occasionally gloomy content. Despite everything that has happened to Thor within the MCU, another movie Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released in July 2022, with Hemsworth reprising his role alongside Natalie Portman and a perfectly cast Christian Bale as the antagonist. Between the Thor trilogy, the Avengers quadrilogy, the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunderand the Disney + series What If …?Hemsworth has appeared as Thor a total of nine times.
4 Chris Evans / Captain America – 9 Appearance
One of the greatest leaders in the MCU is Steve Rogers AKA Captain America, a super-soldier who is relentlessly optimistic, played by Chris Evans. Captain America is a key player within the MCU as he acts as an inspirational leader to the Avengers. Evans has made nine appearances: in the Captain America films, played a leading role in all four Avengers films, and even a number of cameos. While Endgame was originally considered to be his last appearance in the MCU, recent rumors have suggested that there may be a chance that we will see Evans don his suit once more. Nothing has been confirmed, but plenty of fans have high hopes that Captain America will rise again.
3 Don Cheadle / War Machine – 10 Appearances
While Terrence Howard was the original choice for Rhodey AKA War Machine, due to a contract dispute, he was quickly replaced by Don Cheadle for Iron Man 2. Cheadle made it his personal goal to bring the character to life, determined not to let the War Machine fade into the background. Cheadle has already starred in a number of films within the MCU: from Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3 to Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Age of Ultron, Infinity Warand Endgame, Rhodey has popped up when is most needed. Most recently, fans saw Rhodey in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and What If …?. Cheadle brought such charisma to the character that there was talk of War Machine receiving his very own film, but that concept was abandoned. Instead, Cheadle’s War Machine is set to appear in the upcoming Disney + series Armor Wars and, if the rumors are true, Secret Invasion – bringing his total number of appearances to 10.
2 Samuel L. Jackson / Nick Fury – 10 Appearances
Who better to play Nick Fury, the head of SHIELD and a moderator between the organization and the Avengers, than Samuel L. Jackson. This veteran actor made his first appearance as Nick Fury in Iron Man. Jackson has made a staggering 10 appearances as Nick Fury throughout the MCU, and while some of those appearances have been as short as three seconds, as seen in Endgame, Jackson brings his own flair to Nick Fury, making it impossible to see anyone else in the role. Jackson’s time as Fury is far from over, as he is set to reprise the role in upcoming films The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaas well as his own Disney + series Secret Invasion.

Robert Downey Jr. was perfectly cast as the snarky genius Tony Stark who makes it his personal mission to rid the world of evil with the help of his suit, giving himself the name Iron Man. Since his debut in his titular role in Iron Man, Downey has returned time and again to give us a taste of our favorite hero. On top of his large presence within the MCU, Downey has been most successful in portraying the development of Tony Stark’s character from an international playboy to a committed leader. While Tony Stark’s journey came to an end in Endgamehis time as the beloved character will live on forever.
