The last few weeks have seen a growing number of Marvel fans demanding that Chris Pratt should be replaced as Star-Lord in the MCU, but as you would expect, it does not look like that is going to happen anytime soon. Just to reiterate that fact, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has made his feelings about the numerous calls for Pratt’s removal from the franchise very clear in a series of posts on Twitter in which he jumped to the defense of the Star-Lord actor.
Chris Pratt has been a part of the Guardians line-up since 2014, has also appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgameand will also star in this summer’s blockbuster Thor: Love and Thunder, and of course the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which is just days away from wrapping filming. As one of the biggest stars of the last decade, also appearing in the Jurassic World franchise which also releases a new movie in June, it is not surprising that someone like James Gunn, who has also been on the receiving end of internet-instigated cancellation, would speak up on behalf of the actor.
One post in particular gained Gunn’s attention, which suggested that Marvel should replace Pratt with Patrick Wilson for as long as the character remains part of the MCU. Gunn was less than subtle in showing his feelings about the suggestion in his response. He said:
“For what? Because of your made-up, utterly-false beliefs about him? For something that someone else told you about him that’s not true? Chris Pratt would never be replaced as Star-Lord but, if he ever was, we would all be going with him. ”
When Gunn was asked if he was “cool” with Pratt being part of a homophobic church as long as he makes money, the director once again was not letting the moment pass without putting things straight.
“He is not. I know the church he currently goes to. Do you? (The answer is you do not, but you heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone where he goes to church, so decided,” yeah, okay, I’ll believe this terrible thing I heard online about this celebrity! ”)”
James Gunn Speaks From Experience on Internet-Based Cancellation
It is still a relatively short time ago that James Gunn was on the receiving end of what turned out to be a temporary firing by Disney over historical tweets. For that reason, he of all people knows what it is like when people trawl the internet to find something to use against someone and tarnish their career.
When it comes to Chris Pratt, the arrival of the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer saw a wave of comments and memes flooding social media, and it is this that has led to James Gunn’s very public defending of his movie’s star. While it seems that there are certainly no plans for Pratt to be replaced in the MCU, similar to how Warner Bros. ignored fan calls for Amber Heard to be removed from the upcoming Aquaman sequel, it is clear that these comments are not just about to go away and will likely only increase this summer with two Pratt blockbusters arriving in quick succession.
