Johnny Depp and others laughed in court during his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard when the actor’s security guard was asked if he had ever seen the actor’s penis, per The Toronto Sun. On Thursday, Depp’s bodyguard, Malcolm Connolly, took the stand to address the star’s time in Australia in 2015 while filming the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
During cross-examination, Heard’s lawyer, who appeared via a live video link in the courtroom, asked Connolly whether he had witnessed Depp urinating in the foyer. But when Heard’s lawyer followed up with a question about whether Connolly had seen Depp’s penis, Depp laughed audibly, finally taking a break from using the trial to practice his artistic skills.
“Mr. Depp was trying to urinate in the foyer, wasn’t he?” the lawyer asked. When Connolly, who still works for Depp, replied, “No,” Depp’s laughter gave the rest of the courtroom permission to laugh at the allegedly traumatic experience for Heard, who sat in silence, unamused. Depp is suing Heard for defamation over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018 detailing domestic abuse she suffered while in a relationship with an unnamed actor, whom most fans assume is the Blow actor (and Depp maintains destroyed his career in Hollywood).
Undeterred, Heard’s lawyer pressed on, “Mr. Depp had his penis out, didn’t he?” before being interrupted by an objection for relevance, which was overruled. “I think I would remember if I’d seen Mr. Depp’s penis,” Connolly joked. The retort caused Depp to laugh even harder.
Amber Heard’s Lawyers Say Op-Ed Protected by First Amendment
Depp is suing Heard in a $ 50 million defamation case to correct the public’s perception of him as a “wife-beater” and to stand up for his children. During his testimony, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor claimed that after the 2015 article in which Heard “made some quite heinous and disturbing” allegations that he would become violent towards her during their relationship and he wants to “clear [his] name. “
Depp alleges that Heard’s 2018 WaPo opinion piece defamed him and that cost him a lot of potential big Hollywood paychecks. According to Depp’s lawyer, Benjamin Chew, although the article never mentioned the actor by name, it was clear that Heard was referencing the Hollywood leading man. “Attorneys for Heard, also an actor, have argued she told the truth and that her opinion was protected as free speech under the US Constitution’s First Amendment. In opening arguments, Heard’s attorneys said Depp physically and sexually assaulted her while abusing drugs and alcohol, “reports Reuters.
The case is being heard in Fairfax County, Virginia in state court, and is in its second week. It is expected to last for six weeks, with Heard is expected to testify this week.
