The Bad Guys Wins Second Weekend at Box Office

Animation takes the win at the box office for the weekend. With its second weekend in theaters, the animated film The Bad Guys has pulled in $ 16.1 million to add to its total haul of $ 44.4 million. This puts the film in the No. 1 spot in the United States and Canada, though it was a fairly quiet weekend for movie theaters. From DreamWorks and Universal, the film follows a group of criminal animals who face a much bigger threat from a new villain in town.

The video game adventure Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is sticking in the No. 2 spot. It pulled in $ 11.3 million with a total domestic haul of $ 160.9 million. It has set the record as the highest-grossing video game movie, and this continued success has likely convinced Paramount they made the right call in planning even more sequels as well as a separate spinoff series following Idris Elba’s Knuckles.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore continues to freefall, garnering $ 8.3 million to add to its domestic total of $ 79.5 million after three weekends. The film is not on track to make back its $ 200 budget in the US and Canada, though it has recouped those profits overseas. These numbers may result in the end of the Fantastic Beasts franchise if Warner Bros. feels that the numbers are too short of the expectations that they’d had.

Meanwhile, The Northman is another film that is considered to have underperformed with its box office performance. From director Robert Eggers and starring Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman, and Anya Taylor-Joy, the film did well enough with critics by garnering a lot of acclaim. The ticket sales have not been as great as Focus Features was hoping for, however, with The Northman pulling in $ 6.3 million with its second weekend.
