Westworld has picked up an Oscar winner for its newest cast member. Per Deadline, Ariana DeBosewho won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Storyhas landed a role in Westworld‘s fourth season. A new image, seen above, has also been released of DeBose in character. The news comes shortly after it was announced that the series returns to HBO in June.
Meanwhile, several recurring stars from the series are also returning for season 4. DeBose joins returning actors Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Angela Sarafyan, and Aaron Paul.
Debuting in 2016, Westworld was developed for HBO by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. It is based on the original 1973 film by Michael Crichton, imagining a theme park inhabited by robotic “hosts” playing the roles of different characters in an interactive Wild West. Since first airing, the series has garnered great acclaim and earned Thandiwe Newton an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress. There has typically been about a two-year wait between previous seasons, and season 4 was no different as the third season concluded back in 2020.
Ariana DeBose shined in her popular role in West Side Storywhich won her a history-making Oscar. She was previously nominated for a Tony for her acclaimed performance as Donna Summer in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical and impressed with her turn in the Disney + version of Hamilton. Meanwhile, DeBose has also been cast in the upcoming comic book movie Kraven the Hunter as Calypso, appearing alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular Spider-Man villain.
This Doesn’t Look Like Anything to Me
Westworld is a series that is not very easy to summarize. There’s always new twists introduced in every episode that will have viewers constantly guessing what’s genuine and what is not. More of these mysteries will be explored in season 4. Series star Aaron Paul has teased that the new season will put Caleb through some pretty difficult times, as was also hinted at in the new trailer, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“Oh my god. (Laughs.) Oh. My. God. I can not wait for people to see what this season is all about. [Showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy] always go so much bigger as the seasons go on. Yeah, they definitely put me through [the wringer]. That is certain. But it was done in a beautiful way, and I loved doing it. ”
A new trailer for season 4 was recently released pretty much out of the blue. It features the music of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” and reveals new looks at characters like Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), Caleb (Aaron Paul), Bernard (Jeffrey Wright), and Maeve (Thandiwe Newton). You can watch that trailer below to get an early sneak peek at the new season ahead of its June premiere.
Westworld returns this summer when season 4 premieres on HBO on June 26, 2022, and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
