Inspired by the success of celebrities adding value to game show spinoffs like Celebrity Family Feud and Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy! will next be getting the celebrity treatment. Variety reports that Celebrity Jeopardy! is a go at ABC with plans to premiere this series this fall alongside Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. It is described by the network as an all-new game show that “welcomes celebrity contestants to compete for a chance to win money for a charity of their choice.”
The official announcement for Celebrity Jeopardy! oddly noted that a “host will be announced at a later date.” That might fuel speculation that Mayim Bialik may not be serving as host, though she had previously been announced as the host of any Jeopardy! primetime specials. ABC chief Craig Erwich also told Variety that fans should not “read anything into” the vague announcement, seemingly confirming that Bialik will be hosting as expected.
“It’s really just about the details of the announcement,” Erwich said. “And we just are not ready yet, but we will be soon. I would not read anything into it. ”
We can not imagine it will be any problem for Bialik. The Call Me Kat star says she’s still hoping to be officially named as the permanent host of Jeopardy!, as she is still technically an interim host alongside Ken Jennings. Bialik has been open about Jeopardy! being her most favorite job, even with everything else she keeps herself busy with.
“There’s no other job I would rather have, “Bialik said last year.” I love my sitcom work, I do. I love all the other things I do. I love the podcast. But I absolutely have never had a better job … the use of my brain and my skillset feels best suited by this job on Jeopardy!. It’s a dream job. I think it’s a dream job for anyone, but especially for someone who is trained first as a performer and then as a science communicator. “
The series, which will air Sundays at 8 pm on ABC during the 2022-23 season, is executive produced by Michael Davies and comes from Sony Pictures TV.
Celebrity Jeopardy! Was First a Popular Saturday Night Live Sketch
While is Celebrity Jeopardy! series is new, the title still may sound familiar to Saturday Night Live fans. It had served as the basis of a long-running sketch featuring Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek with different celebrities failing spectacularly at the game show. Darell Hammond always returned for each sketch as Sean Connery, depicted as mischievous and always more focused on making life miserable for Trebek than actually playing the game properly. More than a dozen of these skits aired between 1996 and 2009 with a special one-off happening at the 40th anniversary special in 2015.
Sadly, Trebek and Connery have both since passed away. With a new Celebrity Jeopardy! series in the works, however, one has to wonder is SNL will be bringing back the sketches with their current cast, this time with someone portraying Mayim Bialik.
