Neil Patrick Harris Apologizes for Mocking Amy Winehouse at Halloween Party in 2011

Actor Neil Patrick Harris has offered an apology in the wake of renewed criticism over an image shared to social media in 2011. At the time, Harris was hosting a Halloween party at his home with his husband David Burtka. The party came just months after the sudden death of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, who passed away in July of that year at the age of 27.

For their party, Harris and Burtka used dark humor to incorporate Winehouse into their Halloween party’s themed offerings. They had created a platter with beef ribs, pulled pork and chicken sausage in a spicy BBQ sauce they dubbed, “The Corpse of Amy Winehouse. “The food was arranged in such a way to depict the deceased singer with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth. One of the guests had shared an image of the platter to Twitter at the time, and in recent days, the photo has gone viral with renewed complaints against Harris.

Now, Harris has weighed in on the controversy with a statement released to Entertainment Weekly. The Matrix Resurrections star acknowledged that the photo was indeed from the party he’d hosted with Burtka, but admits that it was just as “regrettable” then as it is now to have made light of Winehouse’s death. Harris goes on to praise Winehouse for her status as an enduring music icon while apologizing for any offense that the situation may have brought to anyone.

“A photo recently resurfaced from a Halloween-themed party my husband and I hosted 11 years ago. It was regrettable then, and it remains regrettable now. Amy Winehouse was a once-in-a-generation talent, and I’m sorry for any hurt this image caused. “

Amy Winehouse’s Story Will Be Told in a Biopic

Amy Winehouse was one of the world’s most influential and successful singer-songwriters, though her struggles off stage had also been well documented. After years battling addiction, Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in 2011. As she was just 27 years old, her death was made all the more tragic as fans can only imagine what else Winehouse may have done in her life and career.

The story of Winehouse will be told on the big screen. Last year, it was announced that Halcyon Studios will develop a biopic about the late singer based on Daphne Barak’s 2010 biography Saving Amy. Halcyon Studio CEO David Ellender said in a statement when the film was first announced“Our team is honored to be working on this project. Although her career was cut far too short, Amy was the voice of a generation and we look forward to telling her story in the most poignant way possible.”

No one has been announced for the role at this time, but Stranger Things favorite Millie Bobby Brown has publicly campaigned for it. She previously told Netflix Latinoamérica, “I would love to play Amy Winehouse. I personally think she is like an icon to R&B, blues, and basically the whole culture of music. I just love her music and I really was impacted by her whole story . I always say that I would love to play her. “
