Amber Heard Issues Statement After Verdict: ‘I’m Heartbroken’

Following 13 hours of deliberation, a seven-person jury reached their verdict on Johnny Depp‘s defamation suit against ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp did not appear in court today as the verdict was read, but Heard was present when the court sided with Depp, awarding him $ 15 million in damages. Heard was awarded $ 2 million. Following the news, the actress released a statement through her Twitter account where she expressed her disappointment with the decision and mentioned what she believes this case means for other women:

In 2018, Depp lost a libel suit against News Group Newspapers, publishers for The Sun, after the tabloid published the article: Gone Potty: How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts movie? Shortly after, Heard wrote an op-ed that appeared in the Washington Postwhere she called herself “a public figure representing domestic abuse.”

Depp sued Heard for $ 50million in damages that stemmed from that editorial. Depp was never mentioned by name in the article, but his legal team argued that it referenced previous allegations the actress made during their divorce. She countersued for $ 100 million, focusing on public statements made about the validity of her allegations by Depp’s former attorney.

The televised celebrity trial has taken over six weeks in Fairfax County, Virginia, and has made countless headlines due to shocking allegations, attorney conduct and often comical testimonies. Throughout the trial, which was reportedly Depp’s way to restore his reputation, fans (mostly Depp’s) have been constant fixtures inside and outside the courtroom. While the trial’s focus centered on defamation, both legal camps have discussed allegations of abuse and assault from both parties. Depp and Heard have both accused the other of being the aggressor and text messages, audio and video were made public.

Depp and Heard Before the Trial

Depp and Heard met on the set of the 2011 film Diary Room, and began dating a year later, shortly after the actors split from long-term partner Vanessa Paradis. In 2014, the actors were engaged and wed the following year. They had two ceremonies, both at properties owned by the actor, in Los Angeles and the Bahamas.

In 2016, Heard filed for divorce. Shortly after, she was granted a restraining order against Depp over allegations of domestic violence. Heard accused the actor of throwing a cellphone at her, striking her cheek and eye, and that the actor yelled and physically attacked her.

In the court filing, the actress wrote:

“During the entirety of our relationship, Johnny has been verbally and physically abusive to me. I endured excessive emotional, verbal and physical abuse from Johnny, which has included angry, hostile, humiliating and threatening assaults to me whenever I questioned his authority or disagreed with him. ”

Depp’s attorneys alleged that the allegations were the actress’ attempts for financial gain.
