Reacher: Cast and Character Guide

Studios continue to adapt Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels for the screen because of the stories’ unique cast of characters. Virtually every suspect has complex motivations and mannerism. Jack Reacher himself is a very morally complex character. The ex-military officer has a unique perspective into the harsh realities of life, and can come across as callous and unfeeling. Yet, Reacher also shows moments of fairness and kindness that make him helplessly likable and even relatable to viewers. Fans of the books love Jack Reacher’s bluntness, dry sense of humor, and fearlessness.

Amazon Prime Video’s newest take on the franchise attempts to capture the complexities of many characters and plot lines in a mere eight episodes. Fans were mostly disappointed by the 2012 action movie starring Tom Cruise, but so far the show seems to have encapsulated all the humor, action, and complex characters that fans were hoping for. Here are some of the cast and characters that have made Reacher so popular that the show has become Amazon’s biggest hit.

Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher

Reacher’s title character comes with all the wit and physicality that readers originally loved him for. Jack Reacher earned his skills working as a military police officer, but has since retired to enjoy a nomadic lifestyle. If that does not make Reacher hard enough to find, his ghostly pretense online and lack of a paper trail add to his mysterious reputation. The seasoned professional still has a mind trained for retaining details and analyzing facts objectively. He has a superpower-like ability to deduce larger schemes from obscure sets of facts.

Some sources say that Alan Ritchson read all 24 Jack Reacher novels to prepare for his role. Thus far, it seems like his preparation paid off, as Ritchson pulls off the moral ambiguity and deadpan humor that comes with the character and is surprisingly even better than Tom Cruise was at playing Reacher. His performance seems to embody everything that fans of the Reacher series were hoping for with his imposing physicality and tough attitude. Prior to his performance in Reacher, Ritchson was known for his role as Aquaman in SmallvilleHank in Titans, Raphael in the 2015 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Gloss in the Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Maxwell Jenkins as Young Jack Reacher

Jack was never known to run from a fight, apparently even as a kid. Prime Video’s new show develops Reacher’s character even further by giving us glimpses into his childhood. Young Reacher‘s brief appearances bring more depth and heart to the action-packed series. Even at just 17 years old, actor Maxwell Jenkins already has a full resume. His experiences range from brief appearances in serials like Chicago Fire and NCIS: New Orleans to roles in feature films like Definitely Maybe.

Willa Fitzgerald as Roscoe Conklin

Roscoe Conklin is the beautiful police officer from the local department. The legacy that her father left behind (he also was a police officer) gives Roscoe a faithfulness and determination unlike anyone else at the station. She digs deeper and more rigorously for evidence on Reacher’s case than almost anyone else, and the two quickly become friends. Roscoe’s optimistic disposition contrasts against Reacher’s cynical one, but as their relationship grows stronger the two find a good balance that makes them a powerful team.

Willa Fitzgerald has subtly developed a rapport for playing charming and warm characters who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty when the going gets tough. Her characters in shows like Royal Pains, Scream, and Little Women have a strong drive to fight for their beliefs and loved ones. Fitzgerald will also appear in Mike Flanagan’s upcoming horror seriess The Fall of the House of Usherwhich is based on the Edgar Allan Poe story with the same name.

Malcolm Goodwin as Oscar Finlay

As a Harvard graduate, Oscar Finlay does not quite fit the simple stereotype for characters in Margrave, but that may work to his advantage. Oscar is Roscoe’s Chief and the detective at the Margrave police department. When something other than the average petty crime of a small town crosses his desk, Oscar is eager to ignite his career. A case as big as Reacher’s could be a much-needed opportunity for him.

Oscar’s strengths are his logical deduction and ability to collect and retain evidence. He is one of the few characters who may have a chance in a battle-of-wits with Reacher. Malcolm Goodwin has already played the role of a detective in the CW series iZombie. He also played the small role of Jimmy Zee in American Gangster and will also appear in the upcoming Fall of the House of Usher (alongside Rahul Kohlialso from iZombie).

Hugh Thompson as Officer Baker

After Jack is suspected of murder, Officer Baker and others from the police station move to bring Reacher in. Jack continues to bump heads with Officer Baker as the series progresses ;, the further Reacher gets into the truth, the more Baker does not like it. Even though there are bigger bad guys to worry about, Baker does his part to be an obstacle in Reacher’s road and add suspense to the series.

Hugh Thompson starred in many movies in the early part of his career, but for the past several years seems to have switched over to performing in more television programming. He appears in shows like Chapelwaite, Forgive Meand Diggstown. He is also known for his role in Sea of ‚Äč‚ÄčLove and for playing Everett in Blessed Stranger.

Chris Webster as KJ Kliner

As his name suggests, KJ is the son of Kliner Sr., President of Kliner Industries, one of the most important organizations in town and becomes more integral to the plot of the show as the story continues. KJ likes Roscoe, and takes her rejections to heart, even getting into a brawl with Reacher over her. He does not play by the usual rules, with Colider writing that he operates without any kind of moral compass. Chris Webster does an excellent job as KJ; he was born in England and still has the best of his career ahead of him. Reacher is certainly his largest role to date, but he also appeared in Most Dangerous Game and Washington Spies.

Bruce McGill as Mayor Grover Teale

This classic corrupt government official puts his stock in with Kliner. Grover Teale is powerful not only because of his elected position, but also due to his family’s presence in the community going back generations. Bruce McGill brings to the character a lifetime’s worth of experience as a character actor, with a career that’s sure to include at least one thing everybody’s seen. Some of his most notable and recognizable roles include MacGyver, My Cousin Vinnie, and Ride Along.

Kristin Kreuk as Charlene Hubble

At first glance, Charlene Hubble seems like an average family woman. She is fiercely loyal to her husband and two daughters, and does whatever it takes to protect them. When Hubble’s phone is found at the crime scene, she goes to dark lengths to keep her family away from trouble, even lying to the investigators. Kristin Kreuk plays this deceptive character as naturally as all of her other roles. Kreuk is known for playing Lana Lang in Smallville and Catherine Chandler in a modern adaptation of Beauty and the Beast (the TV show).

Harvey Guillen as Jasper

Despite his friendly and simple demeanor, Jasper becomes a very strong and important ally to Team Reacher. His medical examination skills make him invaluable to the murder investigation. Jasper loves Margave and the quiet life he’s established in the small town. When the tragedy befalls Margrave, Jasper rises to the challenge to protect his community and keep his town safe. Harvey Guillen appeared in What We Do in the Shadows and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlisthaving great comedic timing but going above and beyond here in a much more subtle role. He often plays strong supporting roles that act as the backbone or crutch to the entire series, and Jasper has become a fan-favorite character.
